Naming the
Crosby
Building:
The Crosby
Building is
named in
honor of
Sumner
Crosby who
made a gift
of several
hundred
volumes to
the township
which
launched the
establishment
of the
library.
There being
no available
space for a
library, the
books were
installed
upstairs in
the building
across the
street from
the old post
office
building on
Black
Diamond
Street,
across the
hall from
Judge
Fitzgerald’s
office,
until there
was space
made
available
upstairs
over the
fire
department
on Railroad
Avenue
between
Fourth and
Fifth
Streets.
Mrs. Theresa
Minaker was
appointed
librarian.
Bookcases
were
provided
through the
efforts of
the Women’s
Improvement
Club. When
the city
hall was
built the
books were
moved to a
room on the
second
floor.
Finally in
1926 the
city built
the present
library
building.
Miss Evelyn
McDermott
became Mrs.
Minaker’s
assistant.
1967 saw the
opening of
the V.A.
Davi
Memorial
Library in
Civic
Center.
